I’ve tried several air brushes before and none of them could give my hair the shine and style I wanted. Out of curiosity I decided to give the John Frieda hot air brush (JFHA5) a try.
I noticed that the John Frieda hot air brush reviews were really positive online, but of course that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s what I needed. Still I decided to give it a shot, and as you’ll see I’m glad I did.

Features
The John Frieda salon shape hot air brush has a lot of features, but the one that I’d like to focus on is what John Frieda calls “advanced ionic technology”, which gives the brush more ionic power than before. What exactly does that mean you ask? Well it means more shine and volume for your hair. My hair has always been kind of dull, but after using this hot air brush, I began to notice it shine.
The added shine on my hair didn’t happen overnight, but give it time and it will. I also noticed that the brush dries each strand of my hair rapidly, something that my other hot air brushes couldn’t do. This feature alone makes it worth considering, but it’s also easy to use. The hot air brush also has an instant heating so my hair dries quickly, which I’m grateful for as my other hot brushes took forever to dry. It’s also worth noting that there are a lot of safety features here so even if you set it to high heat like I do, it’s perfectly safe to use.
As far as specs go, the John Frieda Hot Air Brush has got a 1-1/2-inch titanium ceramic barrel, which is kind of large, and 500 watts of power, which should be enough for most of us. The bristles are anti-static and tangle free and I had no problems using them to get rid of the moisture in my hair. I’ve got shoulder length hair and it’s quite thick, but the bristles had no trouble drying each strand.
Usability
According to John Frieda, this hot hair brush produces up to 50% extra ions compared to other brushes. I did some research on this and found that when matched with other hot air brushes, it does work better. In addition to these studies, I can vouch from my own experience as my hair is now smoother, more manageable, frizz free and shiny.
But this hot air brush isn’t just effective as it’s also well-designed. One of the problems I had with my other hot brushes is they’re awkward to use, and changing settings required a lot of effort. Thankfully John Frieda has an ergonomic design so I can use it at any angle easily. The JFHA5 is also surprisingly lightweight and is balanced for long and short hair. I especially like the contour on the handle as it allows me to hold the brush for extended periods without getting tired.
The ergonomic design of this hot air brush is really good, and John Frieda did a nice job balancing the power features with usability. That’s usually something difficult to pull off with hot air brushes, but they got it right here. I also like the fact that the high heat setting doesn’t get so hot that it feels like my hair is on fire. A cool setting is also available which I use for curling.
Pros
- The brush feels very sturdy when I hold it
- It’s easy to use
- It doesn’t vibrate like cheap brushes do
- It takes away the frizz in hair quickly
Cons
- The button design and placement could have been better. I’m referring to the “cool” setting, but it’s not really a big deal and doesn’t affect the brush’s functionality in any way.
- The barrel is a bit too large for my taste
Conclusion
The John Frieda salon shape hot air brush is just impressive, period. As someone who’s tried just about every brand out there, I can say that this does the job and more. The instant heat up feature is perfect, and there are two kinds of bristles included, soft, normal bristles and stiff, longer ones.
Both work great and it helps me manage my hair easily, and I don’t feel any stiffness when I use it. More importantly I’m not concerned about getting my fingers burned while I’m using this. Bottom line: if you’re sick and tired of the kinks and the fizz in your hair, give this a try and you’ll be happy you did.
